Wouldn't it be a terrific revenue booster if the 2018 Winter Olympics came to Denver, Colorado? The Colorado ski resorts would be bursting at the seams, and all area businesses would flourish with the income from tourists visiting from around the world.
The Metro Denver Sports Commission hired an Olympic consultant to talk up Denver a city that would be interested in hosting the Olympics for the Winter Games. "We're looking at and continuing to talk about (the Olympics) from an exploratory committee standpoint," said Rob Cohen, chairman of the Metro Denver Sports Commission, who led fellow board members on a six-day Torino tour. "Everybody knows we've been talking about the pros and cons of multisport events and what they do and don't do for cities."
Colorado ski resorts would certainly benefit from such a huge event. It is a very iffy situation. Colorado refused to host the Winter Games in 1976, and is still wary of undertaking such an enormous event. The Olympic committee may be unwilling to forget the previous refusal, which would leave Colorado out of the running for 2018.
However, according to Cohen, ""Not one of the federations that I met with ever brought up '76 as a reason why they wouldn't bring their international event here. I came back with eight events for us to bid on."
The Metro Denver Sports Commission is hoping to host ski and snowboarding, cycling, and world hockey. They are hoping their world class ski-resorts are a draw for the Olympic committee. Another positive feature to the Olympics in Colorado is the Denver International Airport and mass transportation program.
Olympic consultant George Hirthler said, "The ambience of the city and the way it is laid out, from Coors Field through LoDo up the mall to the Capitol creates a great urban festival center, whether you're hosting an international cycling race, an ice skating championship or a multisport event."
The state of Colorado would attain significant economic benefits from hosting the Olympics. Such benefits could include increase in jobs, millions of dollars income to business and workers, and millions of dollars in state taxes and revenue.
Colorado would also gain international recognition as a prime winter sports area, generating income from new facilities as a result of the games. These benefits could lead to new programs and opportunities for residents of the state.
